In May-June 2007, two teams of volunteer orthopedic surgeons will travel to Vietnam for the sixth annual surgical project sponsored by the Prosthetics Outreach Foundation and American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. Their goal is to perform much-needed orthopedic surgeries for 60 patients, most of them children, suffering from lower-limb deformities such as clubfoot. Amputees in need of revision surgeries will also number among the recipients of these life-changing surgeries, without which they are unable to be fit with a prosthetic limb.
As in past years, the patients will be treated by two teams of volunteer surgeons, each team consisting of two members. Team 1 is set to arrive in Vietnam on May 18th and will be comprised of E. Greer Richardson, M.D., and Steven C. Sheskier, M.D., from Tennessee and New York, respectively. Team 2 will arrive in Vietnam on June 1st and consists of Michael M. Romash, M.D., from Virginia, and Dr. Meir Nyska, from Israel.
Both teams will perform surgeries over a two-week period, their trips overlapping at the midpoint for the Annual Orthopedic Surgery Seminar on Saturday, June 2nd, in Hanoi. Prior to the seminar, Drs. Richardson and Sheskier will volunteer their surgical expertise for one week each at the Vinh Orthopedic Center and the Ba Vi Orthopedic Hospital. After the seminar, Team 1 will return to the U.S. while Drs. Romash and Meir will begin their week in Vinh before moving on to perform additional surgeries at the Lao Cai Hospital.
Please check back for further news as this year's surgical project gets underway.
