Prosthetics Outreach Foundation Board Member George W. Bagby, M.D., (Spokane, Wash.) has provided generous seed funding to establish an endowment with the Prosthetics Outreach Foundation. The primary goal of the Bagby Family Endowment is to support the long-term operations of the Nalta Hospital in rural southwestern Bangladesh. Dr. Bagby helped establish the 30-bed hospital with Prof. Dr. Ruhal Haque, one of Bangladesh’s leading orthopedic surgeons, in 2000. The hospital includes a prosthetics and orthotics center that the Prosthetics Outreach Foundation helped establish and continues to support.
The hospital fills a critical healthcare gap for an estimated 10 million people in rural southwestern Bangladesh. It provides general medical treatment, eye care, and dental services along with orthopedic surgical assistance and prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation care. The latter involves the custom-fabrication of well-fitting artificial limbs and orthotic devices. Since its inception, the hospital and associated prosthetics and orthotics center have treated hundreds of patients.
The Bagby Family Endowment was initiated to help meet the long-term financial needs of the Nalta Hospital and associated rehabilitation center, including the acquisition of vital equipment and supplies, and training of medical staff. Over time, the fund will also provide supplemental funding to POF programs worldwide.
At present, the endowment is managed by POF Board Members George Bagby, M.D., and Ernest Burgess, POF Advisors Mary Luft Gladhart and Doreen Fox Kelsey, and POF Executive Director Winfried Danke.
