The Prosthetics Outreach Foundation (POF) is pleased to report that the new prosthetics and orthotics center in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, has been completed. Construction began last fall. The center will provide urgently needed prosthetic services for amputees throughout northern Sierra Leone. This area saw some of the fiercest fighting during the country’s civil war.
POF Technical Director, Raymond Pye, left for Sierra Leone on May 25, 2006. Mr. Pye will oversee the installation of prosthetic fabrication equipment at the new center. Additionally, Mr. Pye will explore opportunities for the local manufacturing of key prosthetic components, such as artificial feet, to reduce the dependence on external aid.
Mr. Pye is accompanied by volunteer Loren Ceder, a retired prosthetist. Mr. Ceder will assess the clinical skills of the local prosthetic staff in Makeni and provide supplemental training as necessary.
During his stay in Makeni, Mr. Ceder will also work with the local prosthetic staff to fit upper limb amputees with artificial limbs. A complete set of above elbow prosthetic components was generously donated by Hosmer Dorrance Corporation of California.
