Three Vietnamese track and field amputee athletes competed in the 2005 ASEAN Paragames in Manila, Philippines in December 2005. The games are a regional contest for disabled athletes from Southeast Asian nations to compete against each other. Through POF, Freedom Innovations, an international prosthetics manufacturer, donated advanced prosthetic feet to the Vietnamese runners that are custom designed for use by sprinters. It made all the difference for these three athletes as they brought home nine medals!
Thuy, the top runner on the Vietnamese team, who has been competing for over 10 years, won five gold medals in the individual 100m, 200m and 400m races and the 100m x 4, and 400m x 4 relay races. If Thuy can shave a few seconds off of her time, she will qualify for the Paralympics, to be held in Beijing later this year.
Phuong, a rural farmer who is newer to international competition, won four gold medals for the long jump, high jump, and the two relay races with Thuy, 100m x 4 and 400m x 4. She also won one silver medal for the 100m.
Sao, an above-knee amputee competed in jumping and running events, but did not place. POF is proud of all of the athletes who entered the competition.
