POF creates opportunities for children and adults
in developing countries who suffer from limb loss and limb deformities
to lead more fulfilling lives. POF provides access to prosthetics,
orthopedic surgery, physical rehabilitation, and non-medical
assistance, such as micro-lending.
We work primarily in Vietnam, Bangladesh and Sierra
Leone.

Vision
Prosthetics Outreach Foundation aspires to be a catalyst for change in developing countries to help ensure that children and adults who suffer from limb loss and limb deformities have access to high-quality orthopedic and non-clinical rehabilitation services. Our main goal is to help create conditions within developing countries that allow children and adults who suffer from limb loss and limb deformities to obtain the often life-long care required for their successful (re)integration into their communities.
The Causes of Suffering
Wars have devastated many developing countries and maimed their people. Often, the effects of wars linger on even decades after the shooting has stopped. In Vietnam, landmines and unexploded ordinance continue to injure more than 2,000 innocent men, women and children each year — 30 years after the end of the Vietnam War. In Sierra Leone, a generation of young men had their legs and arms amputated during a bloody civil war, disabling them for life.
The loss of life and limbs to landmines and armed conflicts stands out for its cruel and arbitrary nature. However, many people in developing countries lose their limbs through equally gruesome work and traffic accidents. Because of inadequate health care, untreated infections frequently end in forced amputations and many people are born with severe limb deformities or no limbs at all. Others develop painful and debilitating conditions due to polio, cerebral palsy or clubfoot. The end result is the same: a loss of mobility and independence.
The disabled are often the poorest of the poor. Rehabilitation services are minimal and too expensive, especially in rural and remote areas. Unable to support themselves, amputees and other mobility impaired children and adults often rely on hand-outs and are condemned to lives of immobility and neglect.
Restoring Hope and Mobility
Over the last 15 years, we have helped more than 13,000 children and adults to walk again. A few dollars worth of metal and plastic can restore mobility and independence to amputees and others suffering from orthopedic disabilities. Please help us bring hope and healing to many more children and adults in developing countries who are eagerly waiting for a chance to walk again and rebuild their lives. Donate today. Your generosity will truly change a life.
