POF Starts Work In Sierra Leone

Between June 14 and June 21, 2004, POF's Technical Director, Raymond Pye, visited Sierra Leone to conduct an assessment of the prosthetic service needs and to establish contact with local NGO's serving amputees. He also met with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation officials at the current workshops providing prosthetic service in the capital of Freetown. Ray's trip was arranged and coordinated by Mambud Samai, the coordinator of the Single Leg Amputee Sports Club (SLASC). In addition to coordinating sports activities, SLASC is a grass-roots organization that promotes community support for amputees throughout Sierra Leone. Ray also traveled to the northern provincial city of Makeni, where POF is preparing to assist with the establishment of a prosthetics and orthotics workshop at the new Makeni Hospital. This workshop will serve the entire northern region of Sierra Leone.

Ray and POF want to thank Mambud Samai for arranging the logistics of the trip once in Sierra Leone, and Alhadi Kamara for his expert driving and navigation.
